History of the LaFayette Democratic Committee
The Town of LaFayette has had a Democratic Committee since the end of the 1990’s, when there was a dispute over zoning and the commercialization of property rights within the Town. Bruce Donohue formed the LaFayette Democratic Committee and served as its Chair until his resignation in February 2021.
The Committee ran a full slate for the Town Board elections in 2000, 2002 and 2003, with a partial slate in 2005. In 2016, Steve Pitoniak and Herb Brodt ran for the Town Board. Their focus was on issues related to the industrial size manure pits being constructed in the Town, as well as continued planning regarding water, sewage and improvements for the Town. They came close but did not win.
In 2018, Jennifer Blusk, who was running for the Onondaga County Legislature, opened the Southeastern Towns Democratic Office located in LaFayette on Route 11, between the Post Office and M&T Bank. After the election it was offered to and is shared by LaFayette, Tully and Fabius Democratic Committees. The office is used for phone banking, passing out literature and yard signs and meeting fellow Democrats.
We have held Forums prior to elections in order to introduce candidates at all levels to those Democrats and Independents that reside within the Town and surrounding areas. Most recently, we are involved in a study group of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan developed in 2012. Since the onset of the Covid 19 pandemic, we have held our monthly meetings on ZOOM. In 2019 and 2021, we participated in the Town’s Earth Day Clean Up.
We continue to recognize that the most effective government is one that reflects the entire population, not just one segment of it. We will continue to encourage and support residents interested in running for local government positions, as well as at all levels of government, and will fight to maintain the traditional values of decency, dignity and democracy.
